Umniah launchs the free emergency call application “114” for its subscribers with hearing impairments
In a new achievement added to its series of social responsibility achievements, Umniah announced the launch of the free emergency calls application “114” for its subscribers with hearing impairments. This launch took place in a special ceremony held under the patronage His Royal Highness Prince Mired Raad Zeid Al- Hussein, President of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
At the launch ceremony of the ‘114’ application, the Public Security Directorate and the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission organized the first free video call in sign language. The event was attended by Gen. Abeidallah Maaitah, Director of Public Security and the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, Bassam Al Sarhan. Telecom operators in the Kingdom also attended the application launch, including Zain, Orange, and Global Modern Telecom Solutions (Globitel).
The new application allows Umniah subscribers with hearing impairments to make free video calls to specialists within the command-and-control center. These specialists have been trained to communicate in sign language to answer their inquiries and provide support and assistance in emergency situations.
Since August 2020, Umniah has been fully committed to providing comprehensive support for this application through its specialized team. This commitment reflects Umniah’s belief in the importance of collaboration among the public and private sectors and civil society institutions. Such collaboration has a positive impact on the services offered to citizens from all walks of life. The support provided includes technical, electronic, and marketing assistance, as well as training programs to increase awareness and technical skills, and environmental facilitations.
Zaid Al-Ibrahim, Umniah’s Chief Commercial Officer, commends His Royal Highness Prince Mired Raad Zeid Al-Hussein, President of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, for his efforts in promoting the rights of persons with disabilities in all areas of life through consistently monitoring their situations, proposing policies to improve their well-being, and mobilizing the necessary resources to ensure they have the best possible quality of life.
Al-Ibrahim also acknowledged the commendable efforts of the Public Security Directorate and the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission during the implementation of this vital application. This application will significantly enhance digital inclusion in the Kingdom by providing access to all members of society, including those who are less fortunate. By enabling them to utilize information and communication technologies and develop digital skills, it will contribute to their social and economic integration.
Al Ibrahim stressed that Umniah is at the forefront of Jordanian companies that support persons with disabilities, especially those with hearing impairments. It has distinguished initiatives in this regard, believing in the importance of this category and its active and distinctive role in society through granting them their rights, which contributes to enhancing social justice and equality in the community.
Umniah signed a cooperation agreement in 2022 with MarthaEdu to provide technical support and develop a series of short videos in sign language. The company also trained Umniah employees in showrooms on sign language/Arabic language and reviewed advertising texts to be compatible with the translation of Arabic sign language in a simple, easy, and understandable way.
